General Description: The first 3 km to the Meander Dam site are easy Grade 2 and shingle rapids the river having been erroded after clear felling some years ago for the dam site. After the dam site the river enters a scenic gorge with frequent grade 3 rapids before it levels out again some 2 km before the finish. A high water, above 1.8 m, paddlers must be very competent as the eddies are hard to get. The water is usually extremely cold. As the height increases so do the stoppers. The initial section from the Meander Falls road bridge is typically lower volume and continuous with several log jams that require negotiation. A start from the Old Mill bridge will yield a run of larger volume more open rapids.
